Child Dies and 14 Passengers Severely Injured in Matatu-Truck Crash
Tragedy struck the Narok-Maimahiu road late Tuesday night when a truck collided violently with a matatu, resulting in the death of a one-year-old child and leaving 14 passengers in critical condition.
The devastating incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the Pinyinyi area as the matatu, en route to Mai Mahiu, was navigating an uphill stretch.
According to local police reports, the truck forcefully rammed into the rear of the matatu, causing it to lose control. The impact sent the matatu veering sharply to the left side of the road, leading to multiple rollovers that exacerbated the chaos.
Emergency services were quick to respond, transporting the injured to Narok County Referral Hospital. Among the victims, a one-year-old child succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash, with the body later transferred to the hospital’s mortuary.
The 14 other passengers remain in serious condition, fighting for their lives in the intensive care units.
Authorities at the Ntulele traffic base have secured both the truck and the matatu, which were towed from the scene. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the collision, with initial reports suggesting possible driver error or mechanical failure.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding road safety in the region, urging authorities to enhance traffic regulations and vehicle maintenance standards to prevent future tragedies.
