Heartbreak in Embakasi: As Children Perish in Devastating Fire
A devastating fire in Mukuru kwa Njenga, Embakasi has left a mother grieving the loss of her three children. Evelyne Koneli, who was at work at the time of the tragic incident, returned home to find everything she held dear had been consumed by the raging inferno.
The fire broke out around 8 p.m. on Monday night, quickly spreading through the densely populated area and leaving 70 people homeless.
It also caused extensive damage to a local school and church. By the time Koneli arrived, there was nothing left of her home, and her worst fears were confirmed when she learned her children, who had been alone at the time, had perished in the fire.
Speaking to Citizen TV, the distraught mother recounted the moments of panic when she noticed fire engines heading towards her neighborhood. Despite rushing home immediately, the blaze had already reduced everything to ashes. Her three children—Mitchelle Ikunza, a Form Two student, Bellamy Chinaida, in Grade 2, and Delvin Myles, who was in playgroup—were among those who tragically lost their lives.
As the community reels from the tragedy, survivors have voiced frustration at the delayed response by emergency services. “The fire engines took an hour to arrive here,” lamented Eric Ambuche, one of the victims. Others like Purity Mwongele are left grappling with the loss of everything they owned.
Among the other casualties of the fire is St. James Academy, a private school with 260 students, which suffered severe damage. Teachers and pupils alike are devastated by the destruction of essential learning materials and school property.
Residents are now calling on local authorities to improve road access to informal settlements to allow for faster response times during emergencies. For Koneli and the many others affected, the road to recovery seems long and uncertain, but for now, the grief of lost lives weighs heaviest.
