Haiti’s Prime Minister Seeks Security Aid After Deadly Gang Attack Shocks Nation Abroad
Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille embarked on a crucial diplomatic mission to the United Arab Emirates and Kenya, seeking urgent security assistance after a brutal gang massacre left Haiti in shock.
The country is grappling with the aftermath of one of the deadliest attacks in recent memory, as members of the notorious Gran Grif gang ravaged the town of Pont-Sondé, killing at least 70 people, including infants, and displacing over 6,000 residents.
The massacre sent shockwaves through a nation already familiar with extreme violence, as the overwhelmed national police force struggles to contain armed gangs. “We are under attack on multiple fronts,” Conille stated in a press briefing before his departure.
His trip aims to fast-track the deployment of additional Kenyan police officers, part of an international security force authorized by the U.N. Security Council. The existing mission has seen limited progress, with only 400 Kenyan police officers currently in Haiti. Conille’s talks with Kenyan President William Ruto are intended to bolster these efforts and ramp up security aid.
In the UAE, the prime minister hopes to secure steady funding to support Haiti’s undermanned police force. “We are looking for sustainable solutions to strengthen our national police and fight back against gang violence,” he said.
Following the massacre, Conille visited injured survivors in a local hospital, flanked by heavily armed police. Reinforcements from Port-au-Prince are expected to arrive soon to restore order in the region, which is a key agricultural hub for the nation.
The violence, allegedly orchestrated by Gran Grif’s leader, Luckson Elan, in retaliation against local civilians, is part of a broader conflict that has displaced over 700,000 people, doubled within six months. As gangs expand their control, hunger and homelessness rise, while international promises of support remain unfulfilled.
