Grief in ODM as Former High-Ranking Official Dies
Former Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Magarini Chairperson Ahmed Maamun Ali, widely known as Akaku, has passed away. His sudden demise occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 1, leaving many in shock.
Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir expressed his grief, remembering Akaku as a dedicated leader who played a crucial role in strengthening the party’s grassroots presence.
“I have received the devastating news of my dear friend and comrade, Ahmed Maamun Ali—fondly known as Akaku—with deep shock and profound sorrow,” Abdulswamad stated. “Akaku was a steadfast and passionate leader within our party. His commitment to justice, equity, and grassroots empowerment was unparalleled, and his absence will be deeply felt by those who had the privilege of working alongside him.”
Akaku was also deeply involved in local affairs. In 2007, he contested the Magarini parliamentary seat, although he was unsuccessful. His influence in the region extended beyond politics, as he was known for his commitment to community development.
Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro also mourned his passing, acknowledging Akaku’s significant impact on the community.
“I am profoundly saddened and speechless upon hearing this unexpected news. The loss of my dear friend Ahmed Maamun Ali (Akaku) is deeply felt, and he will be greatly missed,” Mung’aro remarked.
Akaku’s passing comes at a critical time for ODM, as the party was set to conduct grassroots elections across various constituencies. The ODM National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) chairperson, Emily Awita, recently announced that constituency-level elections would be held on Wednesday, April 9, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. These elections will take place through consensus or voting by a show of hands.
The application period for candidates vying for grassroots positions ran from March 20 to March 31. As is customary, 77 party officials will be elected nationwide across four committees: Mainstream, Women’s League, Youth League, and Disability League.
The available positions include Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer, Deputy Treasurer, Organising Secretary, Deputy Organising Secretary, Secretary for Women, Secretary for Youth, Secretary for Disability, and Special Interest Group Representative, among others.
Given Akaku’s strong influence in the Coast region, many had anticipated that he would play a key role in these elections. His absence is expected to leave a notable gap in ODM’s grassroots leadership, with many candidates previously seeking his endorsement.
