Grenades Suspects Detained for 7 Days, DCI Requests Review
A Magistrates Court has granted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) permission to detain two men who were allegedly found in possession of hand grenades for seven days as investigations continue.
The state initially requested a 14-day detention period, but Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochoi ruled that this was excessive. He noted that the seriousness of the charges warranted a shorter remand period to confirm the suspects’ identities.
Chief Magistrate Ochoi ordered the suspects, Dancan Otieno and Calvin Odongo, to be held at Central Police Station. He emphasized the need for their identity verification before any potential release.
However, Advocate Willis Otieno, representing the suspects, immediately challenged the ruling, requesting a non-custodial order.
He argued that the explosives were planted by officers, as captured on CCTV, and urged the court to consider the innocence of his clients. Otieno stated, “Allow the innocent to get out of the fight and let the giants fight like giants.”
The state dismissed these allegations, pointing out that no evidence or affidavit had been submitted to support the claims. The court was also informed that there was no new material warranting a review of the earlier order. Magistrate Ochoi has directed all parties to return to court tomorrow for a ruling on whether the detention order will be reconsidered.
