Govt to Seize Salaries and Properties of 2,000 Staff
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has set its sights on recovering millions paid to government employees who fraudulently secured jobs using fake academic certificates.
Speaking at the annual Citam Church business forum on October 28, EACC Chairman Bishop David Oginde revealed that several individuals have already faced legal action and that the commission has reclaimed both salaries and assets accrued by these fraudulent employees during their employment.
“We’re discovering many people have secured positions in both public and private sectors using fake certificates,” Oginde explained. “Several of them have been taken to court, and we have recovered the monies they were paid during the time they served under those certificates.
” He further noted that some public sector employees had, through these fake credentials, received salaries amounting to hundreds of millions of shillings.
In a candid discussion on the challenges in fighting corruption, Oginde underscored the complexity and cost of tackling graft, especially large-scale cases.
He highlighted that some corruption schemes involve foreign financial networks, making investigations both logistically and financially demanding. “Investigating corruption, especially big corruption, is very expensive,” Oginde stated, adding that international linkages often necessitate costly overseas operations.
The EACC’s intensified anti-corruption drive recently led to the arrest of several officials in Bomet County over an alleged KSh1.2 billion embezzlement scheme. Additionally, four individuals were apprehended for allegedly misappropriating KSh4 million under the pretense of funding a World War I commemoration.
With Human Resource Management recently identified as the most corruption-prone department in Kenya’s public sector, the spotlight is firmly on systemic reforms in areas such as payroll management, recruitment, and compensation. As the EACC advances its fight against graft, more departments and employees may soon find themselves under scrutiny for corruption-related offenses.
