Gachagua’s Impeachment Paves Path for Kindiki as New Deputy
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party is preparing for a major shift in its top leadership, pending a court ruling on the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar, speaking to the press on Tuesday, shared that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is ready to take swift action to replace Gachagua with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, who has been nominated to be the next Deputy President.
“Once the court process concludes, we will convene as a party to formalize Kindiki’s role as the new Deputy Party Leader,” Omar stated.
He advised Gachagua to consider stepping down from his court battles, suggesting that a dignified exit could pave the way for him to regroup and pursue his political ambitions outside of the current dispute. “If he wants to go and reorganize politically, we wish him the best, but it’s time for us to move forward,” he added.
President William Ruto nominated Kindiki on October 18 following Gachagua’s impeachment by the Senate. Gachagua, however, has contested the Senate’s decision, especially since it was made during his hospitalization, a point his legal team argued as grounds for procedural bias.
Despite these proceedings, Gachagua maintains he is the legitimate Deputy President and vows to fight for his position.
“I am still the rightful Deputy President, and I will exhaust every legal avenue to protect my mandate,” Gachagua declared. The unfolding political drama is expected to reach its peak once the court issues its ruling.
