Gachagua Rebukes Ruto Over ‘Insults,’ Promises Mt. Kenya Rebirth
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a stinging critique of President William Ruto, accusing him of disrespecting the electorate that propelled him to power. Speaking at Bahati Church in Ichamara, Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County, Gachagua took issue with the President’s alleged habit of disparaging Kenyans opposed to controversial government policies.
“If nothing else, respect this community for their kindness towards you,” said Gachagua. He criticized Ruto’s remarks on cattle vaccination, a subject of contention in parts of the country, adding, “Your new friends may accompany you to rallies, but they should not be used to insult and lecture us, calling us stupid.”
Gachagua urged Ruto to adopt a listening stance rather than dismissing dissenting views with scorn. “Wakitoa maoni yao, hakuna haja kuwatukana—skiza tu, hata kama hupendi,” he said. “Calling people stupid or possessed is unnecessary, especially when they are the ones who voted for you.”
Claims of Betrayal and Assassination Plot
The former deputy president accused Ruto of unfairly labeling central region politicians as tribalists, despite the overwhelming support Mt. Kenya gave the President in the last election. “Don’t insult us or call us tribalists. We voted for you even though you are not from our tribe. That alone shows we are not tribalists,” Gachagua asserted.
He further alleged that the government orchestrated an assassination attempt against him during the November 28 Limuru attack. He accused the government of using Kikuyu youths to stage the incident as an internal community conflict.
“The attack was a clear assassination attempt orchestrated by the government. Despite ample evidence, no arrests have been made, and my allies are being harassed to conceal the truth,” Gachagua claimed, criticizing Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja for inaction.
Mount Kenya’s Political Future
Gachagua also decried what he termed as humiliation and betrayal of Mt. Kenya leaders by the current administration. “In this community, betrayal is a taboo, an abomination. It is one act that is never forgiven—there is no remedy,” he stated.
Promising to lead a political revival in the region, Gachagua announced plans for a major declaration in January 2025 to restore Mt. Kenya’s dignity and autonomy. “Be assured that we will regain our dignity as a community,” he said.
His remarks come at a time of growing political tension and uncertainty over the unity of the influential Mt. Kenya region ahead of the next election cycle.
