Gachagua Fires Back at Ruto Over Ksh10B Allegation
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly dismissed President William Ruto’s remarks regarding his impeachment, accusing him of misleading Kenyans about the real reasons behind his ouster.
In a statement posted on his X account on Monday, March 31, shortly after Ruto’s televised interview at Sagana State Lodge, Gachagua refuted claims that he sought Ksh10 billion to rally Mt Kenya support for the president. He also rejected Ruto’s assertion that internal conflicts with State House officials and Members of Parliament led to his impeachment.
The former DP accused the Head of State of fabricating narratives to justify his removal. According to Gachagua, such dishonesty reflects failed leadership and endangers the nation.
“The biggest threat to Kenya is outright deception by its leaders, failing to coordinate their narratives and misleading the people. I weep for my country, Kenya,” Gachagua wrote.
His reaction came less than an hour after Ruto publicly addressed his impeachment for the first time since his removal from office.
Ruto’s Justification for Gachagua’s Ouster
During a roundtable interview with journalists in Nyeri County, Ruto disclosed that Gachagua’s clashes with key government figures, including blogger Dennis Itumbi and MPs Ndindi Nyoro and Kimani Ichung’wah, triggered his impeachment. The president explained that he had attempted to mediate but that his deputy intensified hostilities, pushing legislators to take action.
Ruto further claimed that Gachagua had issued an ultimatum, demanding Ksh10 billion and warning that failure to comply would make Ruto a one-term president.
“I asked him why he was fighting with Itumbi, my PA Farouk, and these young leaders. What was the need for such small battles?” Ruto questioned.
“He told me I would only serve one term unless I met certain conditions. He specifically demanded Ksh10 billion to ‘talk to the Mt Kenya region.’ I refused. I told him that if I must serve only one term because of this, so be it. That’s when MPs started a war,” Ruto revealed.
Gachagua’s Historic Impeachment
Gachagua was impeached in October 2024 by the Senate on multiple charges, including abuse of office and tribalism. His removal marked a historic moment as he became the first deputy president to be impeached since Kenya’s 2010 Constitution was enacted.
