Free Treatment To Cancer, Diabetes Patients Under SHA
Eldoret: The Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Deborah Barasa, has urged Kenyans to enroll in the newly introduced Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) under the Social Health Authority (SHA), emphasizing its affordability and inclusivity for all citizens.
During the official launch of the SHA program in Eldoret, the Health CS announced that registered members would enjoy free healthcare services, including medication, at lower-tier public health facilities across the country.
“If you register… When you go to a health center, you will be treated and given drugs for free,” stated Dr. Barasa.
She highlighted that with a contribution of just 2.75% of one’s income, beneficiaries would access services at higher-level facilities (levels 4, 5, and 6), ensuring coverage for critical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses.
Governor Jonathan Bii of Uasin Gishu, who was present at the event, reinforced the benefits of the SHA, noting that it would greatly ease the financial burden on families dealing with chronic diseases.
He criticized leaders who have opposed the government’s healthcare reforms, describing them as obstacles to progress.
The launch of SHA marks the end of the long-standing National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), ushering in a new era of universal healthcare coverage for all Kenyans. Dr. Barasa encouraged citizens to seize this opportunity to ensure their health and wellbeing.
