Former Minister Injured in Awasi-Kericho Road Accident, Three Hospitalized
Former Cabinet Minister Franklin Bett was injured in a road accident on Thursday night along the Awasi-Kericho road in Kisumu County. The incident occurred at around 7 p.m. on August 15 in the Karange area, involving Bett’s four-wheel-drive vehicle and a tractor transporting sugarcane.
According to police reports, Bett’s driver rammed into the tractor, which was moving in the same direction. The tractor lacked proper signage, making it difficult for the driver to notice it ahead. After the collision, the tractor’s driver did not stop and continued to an unknown destination.
Bett sustained a deep cut on his forehead, while his driver and two female passengers suffered minor injuries. All were immediately rushed to Awasi Catholic Hospital, where Bett was later referred to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu for further treatment.
The police have since towed Bett’s vehicle to the station for inspection and are actively searching for the tractor involved in the accident. This incident has raised fresh concerns about the frequent accidents involving sugarcane tractors, which are often inadequately marked, posing dangers to other road users.
In related news, two people were killed in separate accidents involving motorcycles. The first occurred on the Kisii-Kericho Highway on August 10, where a pillion passenger died after the motorcycle she was on was struck by a car. The second fatality happened on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway near Umash area, when a motorcyclist collided with the rear of a stationary trailer, dying instantly.
Authorities continue to urge caution on the roads, with ongoing campaigns targeting the increasing number of motorcycle-related accidents.
