“Farah Maalim Expelled from Wiper Party over Controversial Remarks

On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka confirmed the expulsion of Daadab MP Farah Maalim from the party. Addressing the press, Kalonzo announced that Maalim, who also served as Wiper’s Deputy Party Leader, had been ousted due to constitutional violations, though he refrained from specifying the exact breaches.

“For avoidance of doubt, honourable Farah Maalim, who until now has been Wiper Democratic Party Deputy Leader, stands expelled from the Wiper Democratic Movement for violating the constitution and the rights of Kenyans and even abusing Kenyan mothers,” Kalonzo stated firmly.

At the time of this publication, Maalim had yet to respond to the announcement.

Legal and Procedural Concerns

The Political Parties Act stipulates that any expulsion must follow due process, including allowing the accused member a fair hearing through the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms. Kalonzo, however, did not clarify whether Maalim had undergone such a process before the expulsion.

Controversial Remarks Spark Action

Farah Maalim recently made headlines for a series of inflammatory remarks, including expletive-laden criticism of Generation Z Kenyans who oppose the government online. Speaking in the presence of President William Ruto, Maalim dismissed critics of the Head of State, stating, “To hell with those who say [President] Ruto must go! Is he sitting in your mother’s or father’s seat? He is sitting in our seat, and we will re-elect him; we will deliver 99 per cent or even 100 per cent.”

The outspoken MP further courted controversy during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests, vowing in an interview conducted in his local dialect to suppress youthful protesters. His remarks prompted a summons from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) for clarification.

Wiper’s Response

Following Maalim’s contentious statements, the Wiper Party vowed to take disciplinary action, culminating in Wednesday’s declaration by Kalonzo Musyoka. The expulsion signals a firm stance by the party against inflammatory rhetoric and potential breaches of its constitution.
