Ex-Machachari Actor Almasi Reavels How He Fought Depression After Her Mum’s Illness
Former Machachari star Ian Nene, also known as Almasi, has spoken out about his struggles with depression after finishing his studies in the United Kingdom.
On Tuesday, July 26, Almasi told Shivani Pau on YouTube that he learned his mother had stage four cancer upon his return from the UK, where he was studying. This news, he claims, threw him into a difficult period of disbelief and grief.
“My mum told me that the doctors said she had stage four cancer. She raised me single-handedly. I feared she was going to die,” Almasi recounted.
The experience was so traumatic that he began abusing drugs and substances to cope with the reality of his mother’s cancer.
Almasi, who was raised in a Catholic family, began to doubt the existence of God, despite his mother’s religious beliefs.
He couldn’t understand why God allowed his mother to suffer from cancer despite being a devout follower and believer in divine power.
“I asked God why he had allowed my mother to suffer yet she used to serve everyone and helped people. She used to help the community yet she was the one getting cancer.”
Almasi went on to explain how becoming a Monk provided him with solace.
During his time at the University of Canterbury, a friend had given him a book about monks.
Almasi had barely grasped the concept of being a Monk by that point.
Almasi met a friend who invited him to a Temple in Nairobi during his battle with depression.
In the temple, he was introduced to some Monk’s values and life aspects, including becoming a vegetarian.
Almasi met Monks who welcomed him to the Temple for further engagement after returning to the UK for studies.
He described how he spent a lot of time with the monks, especially during the holidays.
According to him, the experience in the temple changed his perspective on life’s realities.
Almasi was a member of the celebrated Machachari cast that aired on Citizen TV for over a decade. Due to some of his stances and lifestyle choices, the actor has been a frequent topic of social media debate.
