Ex-Governor Arrested After Ambush on Nairobi Highway
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu found himself in police custody after an unexpected ambush by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) along the Eastern Bypass in Nairobi. The incident, which caught many by surprise, was confirmed by his lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru.
Waititu was reportedly conducting his usual business when DCI officers intercepted him, and he was subsequently taken to the DCI headquarters located on Kiambu Road. At the time of his arrest, he was accompanied by his lawyer and former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.
“My client has been arrested by officers from the DCI, and we are currently at the DCI headquarters here in Nairobi,” Njiru revealed in an interview with Kenyans.co.ke. He further disclosed that the arrest was allegedly linked to hate speech remarks made by Waititu in his native Kikuyu language during a previous event in Kiambu County.
“They informed us that they arrested him because of an utterance of hate speech that they alleged he made in his native Kikuyu language,” Ndegwa elaborated.
The lawyer questioned the motives behind the arrest, suggesting that it was a strategic move by law enforcement to coerce Waititu into incriminating himself. Ndegwa emphasized that the allegations were unsubstantiated and advised his client to exercise his constitutional right to remain silent.
“I have instructed him to remain silent because the claims are not valid, and it seems this is a move to curtail the freedom of expression for my client as enshrined in the constitution,” he asserted.
Despite the ongoing investigations, Ndegwa and his team are working tirelessly to secure Waititu’s release, with efforts being made to have him granted bail or bond. The former governor’s close affiliation with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also raised suspicions that this arrest might be politically motivated, given Waititu’s public support for the Deputy President.
As of now, DCI officers have insisted on detaining Waititu at their facility until they complete their preliminary investigations, but his legal team remains hopeful of a swift release.
