End Of Teacher Strike; KUPPET Calls Off
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has officially ended the teacher strike that began last week following a high-stakes meeting with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Monday.
At a joint press conference, KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori and TSC CEO Nancy Macharia announced the decision to suspend the industrial action as they work towards resolving the pending issues. The strike, which aimed to push for the full implementation of the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement (CBA), has been temporarily halted with assurances that critical concerns are being addressed.
Misori highlighted key achievements from the negotiations, including the fulfillment of the CBA, restoration of the medical cover, and efforts by TSC to secure funds for the promotion of more teachers. He reassured teachers who participated in the strike that there would be no repercussions for their involvement.
Macharia expressed TSC’s commitment to the teaching fraternity, emphasizing the importance of ensuring students do not suffer due to the ongoing disputes. “Our teachers are dedicated, and we are united in our goal to ensure that lost time is recovered,” she said, adding that ongoing efforts will be communicated as progress is made.
The strike was primarily driven by KUPPET’s demand for a more substantial salary increment to meet the rising cost of living. While acknowledging the government’s steps, KUPPET insists that more needs to be done, especially in the area of teacher promotions and proper remuneration for those in acting positions.
