Edwin Sifuna Rejects Gazetted Pay Rise Amid Public Outcry
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has firmly rejected the proposed salary increase of Sh14,000, sparking a significant conversation about the priorities of state officials amid economic challenges faced by many Kenyans.
Responding to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) report on the pay rise for senior state officials, Sifuna made it clear that he neither requested nor requires the additional income.
“Let’s be clear about what we are discussing. The SRC is proposing to add 14k to my salary. I didn’t ask for it. I don’t need it. It’s still money, in a country where many have no income, but for perspective, I pay close to 300k in income tax every month,” Sifuna stated.
Emphasizing his stance on the matter, the Nairobi Senator continued, “I will not fight for 14k extra when the whole country is saying we need to lessen the taxpayer burden. I don’t want this 14k. Ikae.”
The new salary adjustments, effective July 1, will leave the President and his deputy’s salaries unchanged
However, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and other Cabinet Secretaries will receive a salary increase from Sh957,000 to Sh990,000. Principal Secretaries, the Inspector General, and the Director General of NIS will now earn Sh819,844, up from Sh792,519.
Additionally, the Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police and Administration Police, as well as the Director of Criminal Investigations, will see their salaries rise from Sh652,742 to Sh684,233. Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate will each take home Sh1,208,362 monthly, up from Sh1,185,327.
Deputy Speakers will now receive Sh966,690 monthly, while Majority and Minority Leaders will take home Sh800,019. Members of the National Assembly and the Senate will see their gross salaries increase from Sh725,502 to Sh739,600.
Conflict of interest is still a crime under the Anti Corruption and Economic Crimes Act. So is Abuse of office. The Senate did not amend this at all. It’s still the position of the law. But outrage must outrage 😀 https://t.co/VkbCzXiOYp pic.twitter.com/ji8zAXCBIv

Despite these changes, Sifuna’s rejection of his proposed increase highlights a broader debate on the fiscal responsibilities and ethical considerations of public officials.
