Drama in Nyeri: Youths Attempt to Block Gachagua, Police Intervene
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua found himself momentarily stranded on Sunday, March 23, as a rowdy crowd gathered outside the ACK Cathedral in Nyeri Town, prompting police intervention.
Footage shared by Kenyans.co.ke showed tensions escalating as a group of youths engaged in a heated altercation with residents, forcing law enforcement officers to step in.
Earlier that day, former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu took to social media, alleging that goons had been mobilized to confront Gachagua as he left the consecration ceremony of Bishop Mureithi.
“So there are goons outside our church mobilized from Mathira to cause chaos when HE Rigathi leaves… Another one of those weird ideas to fight RiggyG that build him up even more,” his post read.
Reports indicated that the group had started assembling while Gachagua was still inside, leading to confrontations with attendees. An unspecified number of individuals reportedly sustained injuries during the commotion.

Meanwhile, controversy also arose over an alleged deliberate power cut at the event. However, Kenya Power swiftly dismissed these claims, clarifying that the outage had been part of a scheduled maintenance plan, with prior notice issued.
“Various parts of Nyeri County were scheduled for planned maintenance on March 23, as announced on our platforms,” Kenya Power stated in response to online accusations.
Gachagua was attending the ACK church event amid the enforcement of a new rule barring political discussions in all ACK churches nationwide, a directive announced by Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit on March 16. Leaders are now only allowed to be introduced and wave at congregants without making political remarks.
