Drama as Villagers Storm Suspects’ Homes in Outrage Over Teen’s Murder
Tensions ran high in Mahigaini and Ngucue villages on Tuesday as residents stormed the homes of two men accused of murdering 16-year-old Purity Makena. The villagers dumped the girl’s body at the doorstep of one suspect, accusing him of the heinous crime.
Purity’s lifeless body was found near Thiba River in Mwea-West Sub-County on Christmas Eve, a discovery that triggered outrage throughout the community. The situation escalated as police officers and Assistant Chief George Mungai tried to disperse the furious crowd.
For over an hour, villagers marched through the area, destroying the suspects’ property despite police using tear gas to quell the unrest.
Adding to the chilling nature of the crime, Purity’s father, John Muriuki, revealed a disturbing clue left by the killers. “Detectives informed us that Purity’s sister’s phone number was written on her hand,” he said, linking the suspects to the murder.
The outrage intensified amid allegations that one of the suspects was involved in LGBTQ activities, with residents blaming him for previous deaths in the community.
“We don’t want them here,” said Paul Migwi, a local resident. “This man has been practicing LGBTQ, and people have died because of it.”
Susan Muthoni, Purity’s aunt, claimed the teenager had been in a relationship with one of the suspects but was unaware of his sexual orientation. She suspects the revelation may have led to Purity’s murder.
Assistant Chief George Maina reported that while the suspects’ families escaped the village unscathed, their property was destroyed. “They relocated to Rogoi village in Murinduko Ward but faced another attack along the way,” Maina said, noting that some belongings were burned.
Purity was later laid to rest in Ngucue village, where church leaders called on parents to protect their children and denounce LGBTQ activities.
“Makena lived with her grandmother and came from humble beginnings. We believe the suspect exploited her vulnerability,” said Paul Maina of Kimbimbi Parish.
Mwea-West Sub-County Police Commander Rashid Ali confirmed the arrest of the two suspects. “They are in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” he said.
The tragedy has left the village shaken, with residents demanding justice for the young girl whose life was brutally cut short.
