Deputy President’s Downfall: Gachagua’s Costly Political Miscalculations
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, once a formidable ally of President William Ruto, now finds himself embroiled in a series of controversies that threaten his political future. A man known for his outspoken nature, Gachagua has increasingly faced backlash for his divisive remarks and actions, which many argue have alienated key political allies and the broader public.
Gachagua’s troubles began shortly after the Kenya Kwanza administration took office when he infamously declared that government resources should be distributed based on political “shareholding.” He asserted that those who supported the administration should reap greater rewards, a statement that many viewed as exclusionary and divisive.
This stance attracted criticism from all quarters, including from within his own camp. President Ruto himself subtly rebuked Gachagua during a visit to Nyanza, reassuring residents that development would reach all regions, regardless of their voting patterns.
Moreover, Gachagua’s push for the “one-man, one-shilling” revenue-sharing model has met resistance, even from his Mt. Kenya base. Leaders like former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho have warned that such a move could deepen regional inequalities and lead to economic friction.
His insistence that the populous Mt. Kenya region deserves a larger share of national resources has fueled discord, leading to confrontations with fellow leaders like Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.
Gachagua’s insistence on prioritizing Mt. Kenya’s unity, often at the expense of broader national cohesion, has further isolated him. His ongoing spats with influential figures within the Ruto administration, coupled with his dismissive attitude towards MPs’ roles, have only worsened his political standing.
As President Ruto distances himself from Gachagua’s contentious positions, political analysts suggest that the Deputy President’s missteps could cost him dearly in the long run. The growing perception is that Gachagua’s ambitions for 2032 have clouded his judgment, leading him to make costly political errors that may haunt him for years to come.
