Defiant Muturi: I Won’t Trail Ruto’s Mt. Kenya Tour
Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has stated he will not accompany President William Ruto during his upcoming development tour of the Mount Kenya region.
Muturi clarified his stance after a meeting with Kikuyu elders, explaining that attending the President’s regional visits is not a standard part of his official duties, unless his ministry’s involvement is required.
He further emphasized that this has been his practice even during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure. “I just don’t follow the President,” Muturi asserted. “As President, he has his schedule, and I have mine. Unless my ministry is directly involved, I don’t need to be present.”
Muturi, who has recently raised concerns about forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings within the government, reiterated his call for action on these issues. He advocated for the establishment of a committee or tribunal to investigate and resolve these matters.
“No one is denying my statements,” Muturi stated, “which is why a commission of inquiry is necessary to determine the truth.”
In a recent interview, Muturi confirmed he would not resign from his position, but acknowledged that his tenure is at the President’s discretion. “Staying or leaving is the President’s prerogative,” he said. “I’m aware of the constitutional provisions, and I accept whatever decision he makes.”
Muturi also revealed that he had requested to be excused from cabinet meetings until the issue of forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings was formally addressed.
His public statements began on January 12, when he alleged the involvement of senior government officials in the abduction of his son during the Gen-Z protests. Since then, he has consistently demanded action, causing friction within the government.
