‘Defend the Independence of the Police!’ President Ruto’s Message to New IG Kanja
Nairobi, Kenya — President William Ruto has called on the newly sworn-in Inspector General (IG) Douglas Kanja to shield the National Police Service (NPS) from external pressures, ensuring its independence and integrity. Speaking at the official investiture ceremony at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto emphasized the crucial role of the police in maintaining law and order across the nation.
In his address, the President stressed the need for the police service to remain free from manipulation, intimidation, or blackmail, reiterating that IG Kanja must uphold the institution’s autonomy at all costs. He urged the police to treat every Kenyan equally before the law, reminding the new IG of his obligation to serve without bias.
“As the new IG, you bear the responsibility of safeguarding the police service as an independent entity that serves the people of Kenya. Your duty is to ensure that all citizens, regardless of status, abide by the Constitution and respect the rule of law,” stated President Ruto.
The President also highlighted his confidence in Kanja’s leadership, pledging continued government support to ensure the police service functions without undue influence.
“I trust in your abilities, Mr. Kanja, to guide the men and women in the police service. We will protect all independent constitutional bodies from manipulation, intimidation, or coercion,” Ruto assured.
These remarks come in the wake of a brewing tension between the Judiciary and the police, particularly following the withdrawal of Justice Lawrence Mugambi’s security detail after sentencing former acting IG Gilbert Masengeli to prison. This incident has sparked concerns over the strained relationship between the two institutions.
In response, President Ruto urged both the Judiciary and the police to foster a collaborative approach to address national issues while maintaining their independence.
