Death Toll Mounts as Israeli Strike Hits Gaza Refugee Camp
In one of the deadliest attacks in recent days, an Israeli airstrike on northern Gaza has claimed the lives of at least 33 people, including 21 women, as confirmed by Hamas-run authorities in the region. The strike targeted the densely populated Jabalia refugee camp, where Israeli forces have been conducting military operations for weeks.
The attack comes amidst heightened tensions following the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. While some had hoped this might lead to an end to the conflict, Hamas’ deputy leader asserted that the group remains resolute and will only be strengthened by the ongoing aggression.
US President Joe Biden acknowledged the difficulty of securing a ceasefire, especially in Gaza, despite talks of potential peace efforts in Lebanon, where Israel is also engaged in fighting Hezbollah militants. Speaking after meetings with European leaders in Berlin, Biden expressed cautious optimism but emphasized the complexity of the situation in Gaza.
The Hamas-run government in Gaza has reported that more than 85 people were injured in the attack, with the death toll possibly rising to 50 as rescue teams continue to search through the rubble of destroyed homes. The true extent of the devastation remains unclear, with communication services in northern Gaza severely disrupted.
Footage circulating on social media shows bodies wrapped in white shrouds laid out in al-Awda Hospital’s courtyard. The hospital’s director described an overwhelming influx of casualties, with medical staff struggling to cope. “Our wards are full, and many of the injured are being treated on the floor,” the director said.
The UN and local aid agencies have warned of a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with about 400,000 people trapped in the camp without access to food or water for over two weeks. Despite Israel’s claims that aid convoys are delivering supplies to northern Gaza, local officials report that relief has not reached the worst-affected areas like Jabalia.
Israel maintains that its blockade of northern Gaza is legal under international law and has repeatedly denied accusations of restricting humanitarian aid.
