Deadly School Bus Accident in China Claims Lives of 11, Including Children
In a tragic incident on Tuesday morning, a school bus lost control and ploughed into a crowd of parents and students outside a middle school in Tai’an city, Shandong province, eastern China. The accident claimed the lives of 11 people, including five students, and left others injured. The incident occurred at 7:27 am as the bus approached the school, with state broadcaster CCTV reporting that the driver had “lost control” of the vehicle.
The crash resulted in devastating scenes, with images circulating on social media showing distraught adults kneeling beside children dressed in blood-soaked clothes, lying next to the massive grey bus. These images, although initially unverified, were later confirmed to be from the site of the accident by AFP.
Local authorities have detained the driver, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the accident. Among the injured, one person remains in critical condition, while the vital signs of 12 others are reported to be stable.
This tragic event has cast a shadow over the start of the new academic year in China, where public schools reopened this week. Unfortunately, deadly traffic accidents are not uncommon in the country, often attributed to lax safety standards and disorderly driving practices. Just recently, in July, a vehicle struck pedestrians in Changsha, central China, resulting in eight fatalities and five injuries.
