DCI Grills DP Gachagua’s Inner Circle Amid Gen Z Protest Unrest
In a dramatic turn of events, senior officials attached to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were subjected to intense questioning by the Serious Crimes Unit (SCU) of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday.
The grilling session, held at the deputy president’s Karen residence, centered around allegations that these officials had sponsored violent groups during recent anti-government protests.
Citizen TV reports that the probe has implicated several high-profile figures, including former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu and former Embakasi West lawmaker Eric Theuri, both of whom now hold advisory positions within the deputy president’s office. Additionally, Munene wa Mumbi, the DP’s private secretary, also recorded a statement.
The SCU has extended its investigation to include allies of DP Gachagua, summoning Embakasi North lawmaker James Gakuya and Embakasi Central MP Mejja Donk. Both are suspected of being involved in organizing and infiltrating the protests with disruptive elements.
The investigation has also cast a wider net, with more MPs and a former Governor reportedly under scrutiny for their potential roles in the unrest that led to the unprecedented invasion of Parliament. Despite the lack of formal evidence, the allegations have intensified political tensions.
In the wake of the probe, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga warned against any moves to impeach Deputy President Gachagua, framing such actions as an attack on the Mount Kenya region. Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the impeachment talk is a distraction from deeper issues within the Kenya Kwanza government.
