Dark Room, Whipping, and Hunger: Billy Mwangi’s Traumatizing Experience
Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji has narrated the traumatic ordeal endured by Billy Mwangi during his 16-day abduction. Speaking on Monday during a reunion with Mwangi’s family, the legislator disclosed distressing details about the young man’s captivity.
“Billy was held in a dark room, whipped, and given one meal a day. It’s evident the abductors intended to break his spirit,” Mukunji said. He described the young man as seriously traumatized, adding, “While we enjoyed Christmas, he was locked in an unknown place, subjected to cruel treatment.”
Mwangi, who was abducted on December 21, 2024, reunited with his family in Embu on Monday morning. His father, Gerald Karicha, expressed relief and gratitude. “He walked into our compound around 8 a.m. We thank God and everyone who stood with us,” said Karicha.
The MP condemned the abduction, particularly targeting individuals critical of the government. Mwangi was among six youths allegedly taken after posting content critical of President William Ruto’s administration.
While three of the abducted youths, including Mwangi, were released, Gideon Kibet, alias Kibet Bull, remains missing.
Mukunji vowed to spearhead legislative reforms to prevent such incidents. “We must amend our laws to ensure that no Kenyan undergoes such an ordeal again. One of us is all of us,” he stated, adding that lawlessness and ignorance of the rule of law would not be tolerated.
He also accused the abductors of attempting to instill fear in citizens. “Billy’s release shows their tactics won’t weaken us. We’re stronger and more determined to fight for justice,” Mukunji affirmed.
The abduction saga has sparked calls for accountability and measures to safeguard Kenyans’ freedoms and rights.
