Crocodile Attack Leaves 32-Year-Old Woman Dead at Lake Victoria
A 32-year-old woman, Elizabeth Akinyi Oketch, tragically lost her life after being mauled by a crocodile while fetching water at Kopiata Beach, Siaya County, on Sunday evening.
According to acting Assistant Chief Esau Oduru, Elizabeth had accompanied her daughter to collect water from the shores of Lake Victoria. They had already filled four of six jerrycans when the crocodile struck, pulling her into the water.
“The daughter, who was unharmed, watched helplessly as her mother was attacked,” Oduru recounted. The girl’s cries for help alerted nearby residents, who rushed to the scene. Despite their efforts, they were unable to rescue Elizabeth in time.
Local fishermen later assisted in retrieving her mutilated body, which was moved to the Madiany Sub-County Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Authorities are urging caution among residents frequenting the lake, especially during water-fetching activities, to prevent such tragedies.
