Courts Under Pressure to Hold Weekend Sessions for Gachagua’s Impeachment, Wamalwa Claims
Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has raised concerns about alleged covert attempts to expedite the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. During an interview on Citizen TV’s Friday Night Show, Wamalwa claimed that certain forces within the Executive were pushing the courts to hold nighttime hearings this weekend to overturn a recent High Court decision that had temporarily halted Gachagua’s impeachment.
Wamalwa alleged that there is a concerted effort to influence the judiciary to fast-track the process, hinting at undue pressure from the Executive. “The Chief Justice has set the hearing for October 24th, but in the meantime, there are efforts to have the courts sit over the weekend at night to overturn the court orders,” Wamalwa said.
He also criticized the rushed manner in which the impeachment process was handled in parliament, pointing out the late-night parliamentary sessions and voting. Wamalwa argued that the Constitution allows for the process to take its course over several days, questioning the urgency that drove MPs to push the process through as if it were an emergency.
“The process was unnecessarily rushed,” Wamalwa remarked, adding that the Deputy President should have been given time to recover from illness and defend himself in the Senate.
Wamalwa further speculated that the push to oust Gachagua might stem from a desire by President William Ruto to have a new Deputy President in place by Mashujaa Day. “One man has said by Sunday, I don’t want that man next to me,” Wamalwa said, hinting at executive influence behind the scenes.
The DAP-K leader emphasized that Parliament’s independence is under threat, accusing it of being “captured” by the Executive. He urged President Ruto to allow the courts to handle the matter without interference, reminding him of his own experience under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who did not seek to remove him from office despite their differences.
Wamalwa praised the High Court’s decision to suspend the impeachment and urged the President to respect the rule of law. “Kenya is not going anywhere; you might have issues with Gachagua, but don’t repeat what you endured under Uhuru’s administration,” he advised, calling for patience and adherence to the legal process.
