Court Refuses to Stop Gachagua Impeachment Public Participation
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has faced another political setback after the High Court declined to issue interim orders halting Friday’s public participation on his impeachment motion. The ruling came just hours before the exercise was set to take place across the nation.
In Mukurweini, MP John Kaguchia held a smaller version of the public participation, where residents voiced their opinions on the matter.
Kaguchia, who did not sign the impeachment motion, made a local analogy comparing the DP’s situation to disciplining a child without banishing them. One resident drew a harsher comparison, saying,
“If the conductor is bad, the driver is bad too,” suggesting that if Gachagua fails, so does the entire leadership, including President William Ruto.
Amid the rising tensions, Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Njeri refused to comply with a DCI summons over allegations that she was planning to disrupt the public participation in Kerugoya.
She dismissed the claims as politically motivated, pointing out that she and other DP allies were being targeted for standing firm on legislative matters. She also accused the government of sending tax authorities after them in retaliation.
Despite Gachagua’s attempts to block the nationwide exercise, the High Court denied the request and set a hearing for October 9, 2024. The application, filed by Fredrick Kiberi, argued that the participation should take place at the ward level, across all 1,450 wards in the country, instead of the constituency level.
