Cocktail Tragedy: Seven Hospitalised After Drinks at Fiji Luxury Resort
Seven guests, including four Australians, an American, and two foreign residents of Fiji, were hospitalised after consuming cocktails at a five-star resort on Fiji’s Coral Coast, health officials reported on Sunday.
The incident occurred on Saturday night at the Warwick Fiji resort, located approximately 60 kilometres west of Suva. According to Fiji’s health ministry, the affected individuals experienced “nausea, vomiting, and neurological symptoms” after drinking a cocktail prepared at the resort’s bar.
The guests, aged between 18 and 56, were initially admitted to Sigatoka Hospital but later transferred to Lautoka Hospital due to the severity of their conditions.
Australian media outlet ABC reported that a 56-year-old Australian woman remained under constant surveillance, while a 19-year-old was enduring “serious medical episodes.” Two other Australian women, aged 49 and 18, were in critical but less severe condition.
Fiji police are conducting an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, Australia’s foreign ministry confirmed it was offering consular support to two affected families but refrained from further comment, citing privacy concerns.
The health ministry has yet to confirm the cause of the illnesses but issued a general advisory urging vigilance regarding food and beverage safety during the holiday season.
This incident comes amid heightened concerns about beverage safety in the region. Last month, six tourists in Laos, including Australians, Danes, and an American, reportedly died of suspected methanol poisoning after a night out in Vang Vieng.
