Civil Leader Arrested While Accepting Ksh3 Million Bribe at Nairobi Hotel
In a dramatic sting operation, officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested the Chairperson of the Consortium of Civil Societies on Tuesday at a Nairobi hotel.
The chairperson was allegedly caught receiving a bribe of Ksh1.5 million, part of a Ksh3 million extortion attempt targeting a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a state corporation.
According to EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, the suspect had allegedly demanded the bribe to refrain from reporting purported procurement irregularities within the parastatal.
The CEO, whose identity remains undisclosed, had approached the EACC after the chairperson reportedly agreed to lower the bribe amount from Ksh3 million to Ksh2 million, to be paid in instalments.
On the day of the arrest, the first instalment of Ksh1.5 million—equivalent to USD 10,800 and Ksh100,000—was about to change hands when the EACC detectives swooped in, arresting the suspect at the scene. The arrested individual was immediately detained at the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station, pending arraignment in court.
The EACC has been stepping up efforts to clamp down on corruption, with this incident following similar arrests earlier this year. In April, two Nairobi County officials were apprehended for soliciting a bribe of Ksh300,000 to facilitate illegal use of a road reserve.
This latest arrest underscores the commission’s ongoing battle against corrupt practices within public parastatals.
