Chief Justice Koome’s Plan to Fast-Track Nairobi Court Cases Gains Momentum

Chief Justice Martha Koome has reaffirmed the Judiciary’s dedication to decongesting Nairobi’s courts, focusing particularly on the Makadara Law Courts.

During a recent visit to assess the court’s security upgrades and service delivery, she emphasized the need for urgent solutions to enhance the handling of criminal cases.

Koome highlighted the Judiciary’s plan to work closely with justice stakeholders, including court user committees, to address existing inefficiencies.

“We are working tirelessly to tackle the space and infrastructure challenges at Makadara to improve the quality and efficiency of service delivery. Our collaboration with justice actors will focus on resolving issues related to timely plea-taking and bail/bond procedures,” she said.

The Chief Justice underscored the Judiciary’s significant progress in reducing case backlogs and improving service efficiency.

She noted that, in the upcoming State of the Judiciary and Administration of Justice Report, the accomplishments of the fiscal year 2023/24 will be showcased, including an impressive 98% case clearance rate in Magistrates’ Courts.

The Makadara Law Courts had reopened in July after the tragic shooting of Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti, prompting a tightening of security protocols at the facility.
