Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that former President Uhuru Kenyatta remains the undisputed king of the Mt Kenya region, despite past political differences. Speaking candidly on Citizen TV, Gachagua admitted that the people of Mt Kenya feel regretful for having dismissed Uhuru’s advice during the 2022 elections when he endorsed opposition leader Raila Odinga.
“Uhuru Kenyatta is the undisputed king of the mountain,” Gachagua affirmed, acknowledging that the community had been harsh towards the former president. “We punished Uhuru Kenyatta, demeaned him, told him off, and embarrassed him for telling us Raila Odinga is a good man. It has come to our knowledge that it was very unfair because his crime was to tell us Raila is a good man.”
Gachagua explained that President William Ruto’s recent stance on Raila has led to a shift in perception within the Mt Kenya community. As Ruto himself now refers to Raila in a positive light, Gachagua felt compelled to reach out and apologize to Uhuru.
The Deputy President noted that in the Mt Kenya tradition, a king’s pronouncement is final and does not change. “A Mt Kenya king does not pronounce himself twice on a matter. Our son, President Uhuru Kenyatta, had pronounced himself on this matter, and that pronouncement carries the day,” Gachagua stated, indicating that the community now feels at ease with Raila.
Regarding his relationship with the retired president, Gachagua revealed that he personally reached out to Uhuru to extend an apology on behalf of the community. “It’s good. Brotherly. We are a very interesting community. We rarely fight, and when we do and realize we fought without a good reason, we patch up,” he concluded.
