Check ; How Senators Were Bribed To Impeach Deputy President
In a shocking revelation, two Senators allied to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claimed there was intense behind-the-scenes lobbying, with enormous amounts of money being used to sway the Senate impeachment process.
Nyandarua Senator John Methu disclosed that Sh10 million was offered to ensure Gachagua’s removal, a move that undermined a fair trial.
Methu, during a televised interview, questioned why some leaders from Gachagua’s own region supported his ouster, hinting that bribes may have influenced their decisions.
He expressed frustration with the Senate’s lack of integrity and suggested that personal interests, rather than the people’s mandate, were at play.
Deputy Majority Leader Tabitha Karanja, who voted for the impeachment, distanced herself from the bribery allegations, stating she made her decision independently. She insisted that if there were payouts, she was not involved.
However, Kiambu Senator Thang’wa joined Methu in condemning the alleged bribery, insisting he would never participate in such injustice.
The impeachment process, which saw Gachagua’s ouster despite attempts by religious leaders and others to mediate, raised many questions about the influence of money in political decisions. Methu lamented that President William Ruto refused to work with Gachagua, despite their election together, and voiced concerns about the increasing role of money in Kenya’s politics.
