British Tribute to Kenyan WWII Veterans: Replacement Medals Presented in Nairobi
Nairobi, Kenya, Nov 10 – In a moving tribute, the British government honored 19 Kenyan veterans of World War II with replacement medals, celebrating their bravery and lifelong dedication to peace. During a ceremony held on Saturday in Nairobi, British High Commissioner to Kenya Neil Wigan presented the medals, commending the veterans’ profound courage and loyalty.
“Today, we honour Kenyan heroes, whose bravery and sacrifice continue to resonate across generations,” Wigan stated. “The medals they have received today are more than symbols; they represent profound acts of courage, loyalty, and selflessness by men and women, many of whom traveled far from their homeland in service of a higher cause.”
The medal re-presentation is part of a broader initiative to recognize and restore the lost honors of Kenyan veterans who fought alongside the UK and its allies during World War II, contributing to global peace. This tribute marks the fifth such ceremony on Kenyan soil, with a similar event earlier this year in Kakamega County, where the British High Commissioner honored 15 veterans from the Western Kenya region.
Hosted by the UK’s Defence Adviser Brigadier Olly Bryant, the ceremony drew attendance from members of the Kenya Defence Forces, veterans’ caregivers, and family members. Notable figures included Brigadier Joakim Mwamburi, Managing Director of the Kenya Defence Old Comrades Association, and Sam Mattock, Councillor of the Embassy of the Order of Malta to Kenya, who has played a pivotal role in organizing the recognition efforts for veterans.
Mattock emphasized the sacrifices the veterans made, both during and after their service, stating, “Veterans don’t often talk about their time in the military, and they rarely discuss the hardships they have faced post-military service, but those memories are never really far away. These men are real Mashujaas—heroes—and are being honored in a small way with these medals and this ceremony.”
The event honored not only the 19 veterans in attendance but also served as a broader acknowledgment of countless others from Kenya, the UK, and across the Commonwealth whose sacrifices in the quest for peace will never be forgotten.
