Bodaboda Riders in Nairobi Disown Sonko, Refute Claims of Endorsing Him as Patron

Nairobi’s bodaboda operators have voiced strong opposition to the appointment of former Governor Mike Sonko as their national patron. They’ve made it clear that they recognize and fully support current Governor Johnson Sakaja in that role.

Denis Ochieng, speaking for the county’s riders, emphasized that they were not involved in the endorsement of Sonko. He stated, “We are here today to categorically say we are not part of the imposters seen on March 16, 2025, on social media, who claimed to endorse former Governor Mike Sonko as the bodaboda patron.”

Ochieng criticized the selection of Sonko as “mere mockery” of the bodaboda community. Operators questioned Sonko’s ability to effectively lead them, citing his past inability to address their needs during his time as Nairobi’s governor.

“We are here today to inform the county and the country that we support Governor Johnson Sakaja as our legitimate patron and governor until 2027,” Ochieng declared.

Sonko’s election as the national patron of the Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Transport Cooperative Union occurred on Sunday, March 16. This union represents over 2.5 million members nationwide.

Sonko acknowledged his new role on social media, expressing his readiness to assume the responsibilities. “Yesterday, I had the distinct honor of being unanimously elected as the Patron of the Boda Boda and Tuk Tuk Transport Cooperative Union of Kenya nationally,” he announced.

As patron, Sonko will be tasked with representing the bodaboda community in dealings with the national government and its various agencies.

The strong rejection from Nairobi operators, however, throws Sonko’s mandate into question. The operators’ preference for Governor Sakaja highlights a clear divide within the bodaboda community. This bodaboda controversy creates uncertainty about Sonko’s ability to unite and effectively represent the entire group.

The riders’ criticisms of Sonko’s past performance as governor underscore their skepticism. They believe their needs were neglected under his leadership, raising doubts about his commitment to their welfare.

This development could significantly impact the relationship between the bodaboda operators and the national government. The operators’ public stance reveals a desire for strong, local representation, and a deep distrust of what they perceive as an imposed leadership.

The unfolding situation demands attention from both national and county leaders, as it highlights the importance of addressing the needs and concerns of this crucial sector of the transportation industry. The bodaboda controversy reveals a struggle for representation and recognition.
