“Beware: Fake County Officers Scamming Nairobians Amid Noise Crackdown, Warns Geoffrey Mosiria”
Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, has sounded the alarm on a growing scheme where conmen are targeting unsuspecting Nairobi business owners. These imposters, masquerading as county officials, are deceiving the public in the name of enforcing noise pollution regulations.
Speaking on Tuesday, Mosiria expressed concern over the rising number of cases, where innocent business owners have lost substantial amounts of money—sometimes reaching hundreds of thousands of shillings—to these fraudsters.
According to Mosiria, these individuals impersonate environmental officers from the Nairobi County Government and conduct unauthorized “crackdowns” before demanding hefty bribes. In some cases, they claim to be collecting money on behalf of county officials, a tactic that has left many Nairobians conned and frustrated.
He cautioned the public, especially business owners, to avoid giving in to bribe demands, as these are unlawful practices. He emphasized that any arrests or enforcement actions carried out by genuine county officers are strictly handled within the legal framework.
“Let this be a warning to all those imposters out there harassing business owners under the pretense of Nairobi County enforcement,” Mosiria declared. He highlighted that his department has prepared charge sheets for legitimate cases, ensuring that individuals who break environmental laws face due process in court.
The officer underscored that Nairobi County, under Governor Sakaja’s administration, operates with integrity and does not solicit or accept bribes.
Mosiria urged Nairobians who may have been victims of these cons to report incidents to the nearest police station for investigation. He also requested assistance from the public to provide CCTV footage of the perpetrators, which could aid in identifying and bringing these criminals to justice
. “Our role is not to frustrate businesses or take your money,” he stated, clarifying that genuine county crackdowns are always conducted with a multi-agency team, including police officers, officials from the Liquor and Licensing Board, and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
He further reminded business owners, particularly those running restaurants, pubs, and churches, to remain compliant with noise and environmental regulations, noting the importance of peace during the ongoing national exams period.
