Atwoli Urges President Ruto to Amend Constitution for Smoother Project Implementation
Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has called on President William Ruto to initiate reforms in the constitution, which he says some individuals exploit to block important national projects.
Speaking at a church service in Kakamega, Atwoli highlighted how the current constitution enables people to challenge government projects in court, often leading to delays or cancellations, even when these projects benefit the public. He expressed concern that such legal obstacles could hinder the President’s progress, preventing him from delivering impactful projects before the end of his term.
“We will support you, but the challenge you face is immense. The first step is to help us amend Kenya’s constitution. The President proposes national projects, but people are quick to file court cases to stop them,” Atwoli emphasized.
The COTU leader stressed that reviewing specific constitutional provisions would create room for implementing large-scale projects supported by the national government without unnecessary interference.
“We need to re-evaluate certain aspects of our constitution because some clauses are obstructing the President’s ability to realize critical initiatives. We must assist him, or he risks reaching the end of his term with many undelivered projects,” he added.
His remarks follow the recent Court of Appeal ruling, which permitted the government to proceed with the establishment of the Social Health Authority (SHA) to replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), despite significant delays due to legal challenges.
