Six students have been apprehended in connection with a fire that broke out at Hospital Hill High School in Nairobi on Monday night. The students were handed over to police by the school administration, in collaboration with the Westlands Subcounty Director, after investigations suggested their possible involvement in the incident.
According to police reports, the six students are believed to have either directly participated in starting the fire or had prior knowledge of the planned act of arson. They are currently being detained at Gigiri Police Station, where they will face further interrogation.
The Hospital Hill incident is the latest in a string of fire-related occurrences that have affected schools across the country in recent weeks, raising concerns about student safety and property damage in educational institutions.
In a separate incident, a dormitory accommodating 116 students at Tututha Mixed Secondary School was engulfed in flames on the same day. The fire broke out just as the Form Four students were making their way to class after the morning assembly. Although there were no casualties, property worth an unknown value was destroyed. Police from Kalawani Police Station arrived at the scene to investigate and assess the damage, with the cause of the fire yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, another fire incident was reported in Kiangondu Sub-location, Tharaka Nithi, where a dormitory housing 36 students at Kiangodu Day and Boarding Mixed Secondary School also caught fire. Officers from Chuka Police Station responded quickly, ensuring no casualties were recorded. However, the blaze resulted in the loss of property whose value is yet to be assessed. The Tharaka Nithi Fire Brigade managed to extinguish the flames, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.
Police authorities have assured the public that thorough investigations are underway to ascertain the causes of these fire outbreaks, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and safety protocols in schools across the nation.
