Abducted Turkish Nationals Sent Back to Türkiye Following Nairobi Abduction
The Kenyan government has repatriated four Turkish nationals who were reportedly abducted last week in Nairobi. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Kipkori Sing’oei confirmed the development on Monday, stating that the move came at the request of the Turkish government.
Speaking on the matter, Sing’oei emphasized the strong bilateral ties between Kenya and Türkiye, which influenced the decision to send the four individuals back to their homeland.
“Kenya confirms that four Nationals of the Republic of Türkiye were repatriated to their home country on Friday, 18 October 2024, at the request of the Turkish government,” Sing’oei said in an official statement.
The four had been residing in Kenya as refugees before their return. Sing’oei reassured that the Turkish authorities had pledged to respect human rights during their handling of the individuals, ensuring their treatment aligns with national and international law.
“Kenya has received assurances from the Turkish government that the four individuals will be treated with dignity and respect in accordance with international human rights laws,” he added.
The Kenyan government, citing the privacy of those involved, has declined to respond to further media queries on the matter until an ongoing review is complete.
“Kenya remains committed to the privacy and confidentiality of the individuals and will not provide further comment until the inter-agency review is finalized,” Sing’oei clarified. He further reassured that the country continues to uphold refugee rights, as seen in its ongoing commitment to safeguarding the well-being of over 780,000 refugees residing in Kenya.
The four Turkish nationals were part of a group of seven individuals who were allegedly abducted last Friday in different parts of Nairobi. The group included a British national, who recounted the harrowing experience of being intercepted by armed individuals who blocked their vehicle and forcibly took them away.
