A Death Calculators;Student Commits Suicide After Punishment Over Missing Calculators
A family in Kiharu, Murang’a County, is grieving the tragic loss of their son, a Form Two student from Mirira Secondary School, who took his own life after being sent home for allegedly stealing calculators.
The student’s decomposed body was discovered in a forest near his home a week after he went missing, adding to the shock and sorrow surrounding his death.
According to the boy’s family, he had been ordered by the school principal to replace two calculators that had reportedly gone missing under his possession.
His sister, Immaculate Wanja, revealed that the ordeal began when a Form 3 student lent her brother a calculator, which later went missing. In an attempt to solve the issue, the boy borrowed another calculator from a fellow student to return to the Form 3 student and also use for his exams. However, the school accused him of stealing both calculators without allowing him a chance to explain.
Wanja explained that after being sent home, her brother returned unnoticed, took tick-control chemicals from the family farm, and disappeared into the forest, where he would later be found.
His body, tragically, was partially devoured by wild animals before it was discovered by his mother and another search volunteer, following a foul stench in the woods. Empty bottles of tick-control medicine were found next to the body.
Family members, heartbroken and seeking justice, have called on the Ministry of Education to investigate the school’s handling of the situation, particularly the principal’s failure to inform Wanja about the missing property before sending the boy home.
Authorities have since launched a probe into the incident, as the community mourns the tragic loss of a young life.
