93 Dead, Dozens Missing After Night Strike
Gaza’s Civil Defense agency announced Tuesday that a devastating Israeli air strike in the northern area of Beit Lahia killed 93 people, adding to the growing list of casualties. The strike, which targeted a residential building, also left around 40 individuals missing under the rubble, agency spokesperson Mahmud Bassal reported.
“The explosion happened at night and I initially thought it was shelling,” recounted Rabie al-Shandagly, a 30-year-old local resident. “By morning, the scene was harrowing—people were trying to pull bodies and the wounded from beneath the debris.” Al-Shandagly described the limited medical support in the area, saying that most victims were women and children who lacked access to proper medical care.
As the community grieved, Palestinians dug through the wreckage to recover the dead and tended to the injured. Graphic scenes unfolded as rescuers and grieving family members carried bodies wrapped in shrouds, blankets, and sheets from the site.
Kamal Adwan Hospital, already severely understaffed, reported receiving 15 of the deceased and 35 injured victims, mostly children. According to hospital director Hussam Abu Safia, a dire shortage of medical supplies and personnel has compounded the crisis, with first-aid materials now nearly exhausted.
Hamas condemned the attack in a statement, accusing Israel of conducting an “ethnic cleansing campaign” in northern Gaza. Meanwhile, Israel’s military confirmed it was reviewing reports of civilian casualties and noted its ongoing operations in Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun, aimed at targeting militant activity.
With no end in sight, tens of thousands have been displaced from their homes in northern Gaza, and the Gaza Health Ministry has reported a surge in civilian deaths. Amid the escalating violence, the World Health Organization has also reported that overwhelmed medical teams are struggling to meet the needs of those injured in the conflict, particularly in the north.
