8,000 Job Openings in Qatar: Kenyan Candidates to Enjoy Free Air Travel
Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced that successful Kenyan candidates recruited for semi-skilled and menial positions by a major Qatari company will not have to bear the cost of their airfare to Qatar.
According to Mutua, the Qatari employer will handle significant relocation expenses, including both air tickets and accommodation for the workers selected to join the company’s hospitality, service, construction, and technical industries.
The recruitment interviews, ongoing in Nairobi, began on Friday and will conclude on Monday. Speaking on Citizen TV’s Sunday Live, Mutua revealed that the Qatari company is committed to covering what he described as the “big costs” of relocation, ensuring workers have a home to stay in and shopping money upon arrival.
However, selected Kenyan workers will need to manage some minor costs, such as their passport application fees, and potentially a small medical cover and visa fee.
Mutua explained the Qatari company’s rationale for not covering 100% of expenses: “From their experience, if a worker pays nothing, they have nothing to lose and might decide to leave after a few months.”
However, by handling major expenses, the Qatari company aims to ease the financial burden on workers while ensuring a level of commitment.
Despite a strong turnout of over 15,000 Kenyans vying for approximately 8,000 available positions, Mutua noted with concern that only around 5% of applicants have qualified so far.
The positions available span across roles such as nurses, kitchen helpers, runners, kids attendants, hotel maintenance technicians, light vehicle drivers, waitresses, and stewarding supervisors.
While Mutua remained discreet about the name of the Qatari company, he described it as a “mega, multi-dollar holding company” involved in diverse fields such as hoteling, medical services, construction, and agriculture. The employment terms include fixed salaries with annual increments.
