6 Dead as Al Shabaab Storms Police Reservist Camp
A brutal attack by suspected Al Shabaab militants has resulted in the deaths of six Kenyans at a National Police Reservists Camp in Fafi, Garissa County. The assault, which occurred at dawn on Sunday, March 23rd, also left four others severely injured.
Police reports from Hagadera indicate the militants stormed the camp around 5:30 AM. Injured victims were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
In response to this violent incident, a multi-agency security team, spearheaded by the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU), has launched a thorough investigation. The heavily armed militants reportedly seized control of the camp upon their arrival.
This region has experienced a surge in Al Shabaab activity, with frequent attacks plaguing the border counties. These incidents underscore the persistent security challenges in the area.
Prior to this attack, the United States Embassy in Kenya issued a stark travel advisory to its citizens. The warning highlighted the heightened risks associated with traveling to Kenya-Somalia border counties, including Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera.
The March 18th advisory specifically identified these areas, along with Tana River County and coastal areas north of Malindi, as high-risk zones due to terrorism and kidnapping threats.
Furthermore, the embassy cautioned about banditry incidents near the Ethiopian border, specifically in parts of Marsabit and Turkana Counties within 50 kilometers of the border.
Adding to the growing concern, five Kenyan chiefs were abducted by suspected Al Shabaab terrorists in Mandera County in early February. Their current whereabouts remain unknown, compounding the security anxieties. The administrators were captured while traveling for official duties.
