22-year-old man on the run after slashing pregnant girlfriend with a panga

An 18-year-old girl from Mbiuni in Mwala Subcounty is receiving treatment at Machakos Level 5 Hospital following a horrific attack allegedly perpetrated by her 22-year-old boyfriend, Brian Waita. The teenager, identified as Ndanu, who is 23 weeks pregnant, was left with severe injuries, including deep cuts to her neck and a broken arm after being slashed with a panga.

The incident occurred after what initially appeared to be a normal day for the couple. According to Ndanu, the two had shared a meal together before her boyfriend left, saying he needed to fetch a donkey for use at the local market. Upon his return, events took a shocking turn.

While Ndanu rested, Waita reportedly began washing his shirt, but moments later, she found herself on the floor, bleeding profusely after a brutal attack. In a state of shock and fear, Ndanu crawled to the bed and called a neighbor for help after her boyfriend fled the scene, leaving her locked inside the house.

A heroic local man broke into the house by climbing through the roof to rescue her. She was rushed to Masii Level 3 Hospital for initial treatment before being transferred to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for more advanced care.

“I still can’t believe that my husband, who has always been loving and caring, did this to me,” Ndanu tearfully shared, adding that while they have no children yet, she is pregnant with their first child.

Juliana Mwendwa, Nursing Service Manager at Machakos Level 5 Hospital, confirmed that Ndanu sustained serious injuries, including a deep neck cut and a broken arm, but is now stable and recovering in the orthopedic ward. “She arrived unconscious but is now stable,” Mwendwa reported.

The incident has raised alarm in the community, with Mwendwa expressing concern over the increasing cases of gender-based violence in the region. She called on the community to stand up against the rising tide of such violent acts.

Mwala OCPD, Muthoni Wahome, confirmed that investigations are ongoing. Authorities are still searching for Waita, who remains at large following the attack
