200,000 Job Opportunities in Skilled Sectors;Kenya Seals Deal with Qatar
In a move set to expand Kenya’s labour market abroad, Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced a groundbreaking agreement between Kenya and Qatar, allowing skilled Kenyan workers to take up job opportunities in the Gulf state.
This shift from previous agreements, which mostly catered to unskilled labour, is a promising step towards combating unemployment in Kenya, especially among graduates.
During a meeting with Qatari Labour Minister Saeed Samikh Al-Marri at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Mutua disclosed that a new bilateral labour agreement is being formalized.
This agreement, expected to amend the 2012 Bilateral Labour Agreement, will enable Kenyans with expertise in key sectors such as ICT, health, education, infrastructure, and agriculture to work in Qatar.
“This new agreement will significantly expand Kenya’s labour export market, aligning it with Qatar’s ongoing development projects which demand skilled professionals,” Mutua stated.
The talks also explored the potential to increase the number of Kenyans employed in Qatar from the current 67,000 to between 200,000 and 300,000, providing a huge boost to Kenya’s economy. As part of the agreement, a Qatar Visa Centre will be established in Nairobi to streamline the migration process, ensuring workers are well-prepared and protected.
On his part, Al-Marri highlighted that the agreement will focus on sectors like education, ICT, oil, and gas, emphasizing the need for high-level skills. This partnership is expected to not only enhance Kenya-Qatar relations but also offer Kenyans valuable experience and better career prospects.
