13 Killed in Israeli Attack Near Beirut Hospital, Lebanon Reports
Lebanon’s Health Ministry confirmed that 13 people, including a child, were killed in an Israeli airstrike near Rafic Hariri Hospital, the country’s largest public health facility, late Monday.
Another 57 individuals were injured as the attack flattened four buildings near the hospital, which is located just a few kilometers from downtown Beirut.
While the hospital itself sustained minor damage, including shattered windows and destroyed solar panels, the surrounding area bore the brunt of the devastation.
Rescue workers continue to search for survivors among the rubble, but fears persist that the death toll could rise.
Witnesses described the horror of the strike, including Ola Eid, who watched from her balcony as the first explosion hit, followed by another that tore through a group of children playing in the courtyard below. “I saw the children ripped apart,” Eid said.
The attack came as part of Israel’s ongoing strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, areas largely associated with Hezbollah strongholds. Despite earlier warnings for residents to evacuate, no such notice was given for the heavily populated Jnah neighborhood surrounding the hospital.
This assault follows claims by Israel that Hezbollah had been storing funds in a bunker beneath the Sahel hospital in southern Beirut—a claim denied by hospital officials.
As the war between Israel and Hezbollah nears its one-month mark, the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon deepens. More than 1,489 people have lost their lives, and over a million have been displaced.
The latest airstrikes have forced even more residents to flee, further overwhelming shelters that are already struggling to accommodate the displaced.
