13 Dangerous Areas You Should Avoid ; CS Kindiki Declares
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has extended orders designating 13 areas within Marsabit County as security disturbed and dangerous, as the government ramps up efforts to stabilize the Northern region. The move, intended to strengthen long-term security measures, follows a similar directive issued in September.
The new order, published in a Gazette Notice on October 4, 2024, will remain in effect for 30 days. “The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National Security Council, extends the declaration made on September 3, 2024, regarding parts of Marsabit County as security disturbed and dangerous areas,” the notice reads.
The affected areas, primarily located within the Hillo region in Dabel Location, Golbo Division, include: Hillo Gorgora, Hillo Orofa, Hillo Walkite, Hillo Tanzania, Hillo Irress Abamartille, Hillo Gootu, Hillo Tessum Qalicha, Hillo Karray, Hillo Hudda, Hillo Qoranjido, Hillo Irress Shindia, Hillo Rabaalee, and Hillo Godde Haroressa.
Law enforcement agencies have intensified patrols in these areas, with limited access and restricted activities. Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has ordered residents in these zones to surrender all firearms to local police stations for safekeeping. “All inhabitants of the said areas are ordered, with immediate effect, to surrender all arms in their possession to the nearest Police Station, Police Post, Police Camp, and National Government Administration offices during the hours of the day for safe custody,” Kanja directed. The arms will be returned once the security measures are lifted.
The extension comes in the wake of rising tensions in Marsabit, following violent clashes over artisanal mining sites in Dabel. In March 2024, Kindiki had already declared the mining areas unsafe and ordered the evacuation of residents to curb the violence.
The government’s continued efforts to secure the region reflect its commitment to restoring peace and protecting citizens in conflict-prone areas.
