12 Days to Go Left to Sign Up for New Medical Insurance in Kenya
Kenyans are racing against time as the government prepares to implement a new medical insurance scheme under the Social Health Authority (SHA) by October 1, 2024. With only 12 days left, those who rely on the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) must register under the SHA to continue enjoying health insurance coverage.
Medical Services Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai confirmed that NHIF reimbursements would cease on the night of September 30, 2024. Starting October 1, all healthcare services, whether inpatient or outpatient, will be covered under the SHA.
Kenyans, both contributors and dependents, are urged to register independently or at health facilities countrywide to avoid being left uninsured. In case of emergencies after the deadline, the SHA will deploy agents at hospitals to assist with late registrations, although citizens are advised to register beforehand.
Employers have also been instructed to shift NHIF deductions to SHA starting October. The Ministry of Health remains confident in the smooth transition, with Public Health PS Mary Muthoni emphasizing the importance of utilizing community health promoters to reach remote areas.
This new medical scheme will require salaried Kenyans to contribute 2.75% of their income, while those in informal employment will pay a minimum of Ksh. 300 based on their annual earnings.
